DESCRIPTION
Since April 2016 Concordia's working group on Feminism and Controversial
Humour has been meeting to talk about humour that addresses race, sexual
assault, abortion, and disability—operating under the premise that
feminists may be particularly well positioned to understand not only the
costs but also the benefits of joking about structural inequities,
including their most violent and traumatic manifestations. Our upcoming
symposium extends and opens up this conversation.
Sponsored by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and
Culture, the Simone de Beauvoir Institute, the English Department, Writers
Read, Irish Studies, and the Office of the Vice President of Research and
Graduate Studies, the symposium is free and open to the public.

conversation about what RIRE accomplished and why it was so successful.

"Gendered racializing in Quebec and Canada"

Fear, insecurity, xenophobia and othering have a long history in
Quebec and Canada, fanned by politicians and media. Gendering of
racializing framed within rights and equality discourse is an integral
part of this. In this presentation, Dolores Chew will draw on the
experiences of Montreal's South Asian Women's Community Centre who
challenge and resist this racism.

Dolores Chew is a founding member of Montreal's South Asian Women's
Community Centre (SAWCC). She is also a history and humanities
instructor at Marianopolis College and Research Associate at the
Simone de Beauvoir Institute of Concordia University.

Dear colleagues,

I am delighted to invite you to the 5th session of the Unit of Play's
Pluralistic Variations lecture series, with Professor Catherine Keller
(Drew University), who will be discussing her latest work on process
cosmology, ecofeminist theology and planetary politics. As ever, the
event is free, and everyone is welcome! Please do come and feel free

Political Theology of The Earth

In a moment of perilous political repatterning, our planetary
entanglements emit signals of emergency. Immediate crises of
immigration, race and Islamophobia are thrown into competition with
the slower temporalities of climate change for progressive attention.
With antidemocratic politics rising, what can theology contribute to a
timely response? While current "political theology" may only obliquely
engage theology as such, let alone the earth, it exposes the
secularized sovereignties of the pater omnipotens as ongoing history.
Might Whiteheadian and new materialist cosmologies of entangled
multiplicity, read along their theological edges, help to trigger
–beyond hope for some new sovereign exception– an earth-minded
political inception?

Catherine Keller is Professor of Constructive Theology at Drew
University. Her work interweaves process philosophy with an evolving
feminist cosmopolitics, engaging questions of ecological, social, and
spiritual practice amidst an irreducible indeterminacy. Among her many
books are Apocalypse Now & Then: A feminist guide to the end of the
world (1997); The Face of the Deep: A Theology of Becoming (2002); God
and Power (2005), and The Cloud of the Impossible: Negative Theology
and Planetary Entanglement (2014).
